How to Make a Burger With Mozzarella Cheese Inside
Some nights, dinners feel like an episode of Chopped. You want to make something nice for dinner, but you also want to use what you have in the fridge because you're not in the mood to run to the grocery store. That's basically the origin story of this Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers On The Grill recipe.
I wanted to make something nice for Pete that wasn't our traditional meals. I had ground beef, so I could make burgers no problem.
But burgers aren't anything special.
I also had a block of mozzarella cheese. And cheese makes everything better. So I decided to stuff burgers with the mozzarella cheese.
And now, we have a new favorite burger. You will too.
Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers On The Grill Recipe
Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers On The Grill Recipe Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 oz. mozzarella cheese
How To Make Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers On The Grill:
In a large bowl, combine together the ground beef, egg, Italian breadcrumbs, salt, onion powder, and Parmesan cheese.
You can start by mixing with a fork, but it works a lot better if you just mix with your hands.
Form the mixture into a large ball.
Cut the ball into eight equal pieces.
Flatten four of those into circle patties, and put them on a baking sheet.
Use a spoon to create a well in the center of each of the patties.
Shred the mozzarella cheese.
Split it between the four burgers.
Flatten the other four patties and put one on top of each of the patties with cheese.
Take each double-decker patty in your hand. Shape the patty so that the two patties are combined, with edges smoothed together, and it's more of a burger shape.
You want to pay close attention to the cheese, making sure it's stuffed within the patties and only ground beef is on the outside.
When you've shaped them, put them back on the baking pan.
Use the back of a spoon to put a dimple in each burger.
Put the entire baking pan in the freezer for 20 minutes.
While they're in the freezer, heat the grill to 400° F. Let it sit at temperature for 10 minutes.
Put the entire baking pan on the grill. Cook the burgers for about 12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Ground beef (with eggs) must be cooked to 160° F to be safe to be consumed.
Serve hot.
We top them with tomato and that's it. But you could add mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, ketchup, or really, any condiment. Plus lettuce and onion if you wanted too.
Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers On The Grill: Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make these Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers in the oven?
You can absolutely make Mozzarella Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers in the oven.
To do so, follow all the steps up through putting the burger patties in the freezer. Then, pre-heat the oven to 350° F. Bake them in the oven for 20 minutes until the burgers reach an internal temperature of 160° F.
Can you use bagged shredded cheese in stuffed burgers?
Bagged shredded cheese has a ton of preservatives in it to keep the pieces of cheese from melting and clumping together.
The trouble with using that cheese in a recipe where you want melted cheese is that the preservatives prevent the cheese from really melting.
Blocks of cheese don't have those same preservatives. So, when you shred that cheese, it will melt exactly in the way you want it to.
Yes, shredding the cheese yourself takes a little longer than opening the bag, but not that much longer honestly. Investing in a good cheese grater is so worth it. All your "cheesy" recipes will come out so much better.
How do you keep stuffed burgers from falling apart?
The key to a really good stuffed burger is freezing it before you put it on the grill. Trust me on this.
A good rule of thumb is to always cook burgers from frozen, rather than from fresh, if you want to keep them from falling apart. Twenty minutes is enough time in the freezer for the burgers to hold their integrity.
Eggs act as a really good binder for homemade burgers. That's why this stuffed burger recipe has a egg in it.

Jucy Lucy
Accept no imitations. The only way to spell Jucy Lucy is with a missing i. A Juicy Lucy is an imitation.
So forget the i, but don't forget the slice of cheese.
A Jucy Lucy is two burger patties made with a slice of cheese between the patties. So, similar to this, but a slice of cheese instead of shredded.
Most Jucy Lucy recipes call for a slice of American cheese, so follow this recipe, but swap the shredded mozzarella cheese for a slice of American to make that Minneapolis legend.
Pizza Burgers
Use marinara sauce as a condiment instead of ketchup to make Pizza Burgers. That way, you'll have all the flavors of pizza, but in burger form.
If you want, when the burgers come off the grill, you can top them with packaged pepperoni to turn these into Pepperoni Pizza Burgers.
